Training Workshop for K-16 Chinese Language Instructors

The Center for East Asian Studies
along with the Department of East Asian Language and Literature
will be sponsoring a National Professional Development Workshop
for K-16 Chinese language teachers in the Fall of 2008. At the
workshop, various speakers will present on different aspects of
Chinese language instruction to be incorporated into teaching
K-16.
Sponsored by the Center for East
Asian Studies and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature
at UW-Madison with support from a U.S. Dept of education Title
IV Grant.

Southeast
Asian Communities & the Shifting Contexts of Learning
Saturday, November 1, 2008, 8:30 am - 7:30 pm | Madison, WI
The Center for Southeast Asian
Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the U.S. Department
of Education offers a unique opportunity for teachers and other
K-12 administrators to explore how Southeast Asian youth are involved
in multiple contexts of learning-in the schools and in their own
communities outside the schools. This workshop is a "must" for
teachers who would like to broaden their understanding of the
State's growing Southeast Asian populations in the context of
a fascinating and constantly evolving field of Southeast Asian
Studies. The intensive 1-day workshop will be held from 8:30 am
until 7:30 pm, on Saturday, November 1, 2008, starting at the
Pyle Center, at 702 Langdon Street, and ending at the Cambodian
Temple in Oregon, Wisconsin. Preliminary readings will be sent
to teachers in preparation for the workshop.

Environmental
and Water Issues Around the World
PAC (Professional Advancement Credit) Course
Madison, WI
The international area studies
centers at UW-Madison are sponsoring this professional development
opportunity. Each week we will explore the impact of environmental
and water issues on different world regions, examining the facts,
media representation, and history that have led to the current
global crisis. Faculty, staff and graduate students with first-hand
experience and academic training in various world regions will
join us each week to share their insight and engage in discussions
with the group. The goal of this class is for teachers to examine
their knowledge and preconceptions about places in the world,
and how best to approach discussing world issues in the classroom.

“Open a Door... Open a Book... Open your Mind... to the World”

This celebration is an annual
interactive workshop for educators, librarians, students and children’s
literature enthusiasts, with an aim to internationalize statewide
reading curriculum. Each author will discuss the stories that
they have written and highlight the work they feel is most suitable
for classroom discussion. Two authors will speak in the morning
and two following lunch. In conclusion, we will have a reception
and book signing.
This event is sponsored by the
Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC) in observance
of International Education Week 2008. International Education
Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and
the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare
Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders
from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United
States.

Goldman
Sachs Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education
2008 Call for Applications
The Goldman Sachs Foundation and
Asia Society are seeking applications for the 2008 Goldman Sachs
Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education. The
prize program was created in 2003 to raise awareness of the growing
importance of international knowledge and skills for U.S. students
and annually awards prizes totaling $150,000 in five different
categories.
Applications
for the elementary/middle school, high school, district/state,
and media/technology prizes are due Monday, December 1st, 2008.

The 2008 Prizes will be awarded
in the following categories:
Elementary/Middle School
($25,000) An elementary or middle school that engages all or
most of its students in learning about other world regions,
cultures and languages
High School ($25,000)
A secondary school that engages all or most of its students
in learning about Asia, Africa, Latin America or the Middle
East, or about international affairs through its curriculum
and through partnerships with other countries or local organizations
District/State ($25,000)
A state or one of the 100 largest school districts that is actively
promoting the development of international knowledge and skills
on a wide scale through the creation of robust policies and
specific programming initiatives.
Media/Technology ($25,000)
A program within a U.S. based public or private for-profit or
non-profit organization that has developed outstanding programs
that use media/technology to educate students or teachers about
other world regions and cultures, or international issues.
