National Security Language Initiative for Youth
US Department of State

NSLI-Y is a new merit-based US Government overseas language program for American high school students that will fund approximately 550 students to study and master languages not traditionally taught in U.S. high schools but which are critical for our country’s future. The program is funded by the Department of State’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division and is being implemented by a consortium of organizations led by the American Councils for International Education. The program has already sent 350 American high schools students to summer language programs in China, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco during the summers of 2006, 2007 and 2008.

In 2009/2010, NSLI-Y is expanding the language offerings as well as the length of time for the programs. There will be programs in Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Turkish. There will be summer programs in each of the seven languages. There will also be semester and academic year programs for Arabic, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Turkish. For more information and to apply online, visit the program website.

The application deadline is February 2, 2009.

EduWeavers to South Africa
July 22 - August 1, 2009

From Trevor R. Getz, Associate Professor, San Francisco State University, History Department and Fulbright Scholar, University of the Western Cape/University of Stellenbosch:

"Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to work closely with history and literature teachers in South Africa. Although I spent much of my time teaching and supporting teachers in the new curricula, I also learned an enormous amount and formed long-term friendships and partnerships.

"I would like to invite you to do the same. With the help of several museums and universities in South Africa, I have organized a trip for US teachers and school administrators for this summer to the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa, where we will interact with educators, intellectuals, and activists. This trip, organized through the non-profit EduWeavers, has the support of organizations like the National Association of Independent Schools, Facing History and Ourselves, the Natal Museum, Shikaya, and the Albert Luthuli Museum.

"The trip itself is planned around the exchange of information, technique, and content between teachers in the two countries. Participants will give papers to South African teachers, and hear theirs and those of South African experts in return. Moreover, we will assist in the development of long-term partnerships between South African and US schools."

Additional information regarding the trip together with contact information is available online. Deposit due 15 February 2009.
