Global Environmental Teachings Program
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Do you dream of Africa? Live that dream with the Global Environmental Teachings Program!

This June 2009 US educators will join South African educators on a 3-week study tour filled with whales, cheetahs, and fynbos. This program is designed specifically for educators. Travel with other teachers on this African journey that takes you along the coast of South Africa between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town to experience the unique Cape Floral plant kingdom, host to over 5,800 endemic plant species. During the journey you will learn how educators teach about the environment as it relates to health and poverty. Be inspired by historical leaders that helped South Africa rise after apartheid.

Only 3 spots remain! Deadline for registration is January 30, 2009.

Hessen-Wisconsin High School Exchange Program
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

February 12 is the deadline for applications to the Department of Public Instruction’s Hessen-Wisconsin High School Exchange Program.

The program is a one-to-one exchange in which students are hosted by the same family of the partner student who visits them. Students often report that exchanges like these have a life-changing impact. The educational systems in Hessen and in Wisconsin have had a relationship since 1990.

Students thinking of applying must be enrolled in German II, III, IV, or V or have speaking experience, and have at least sophomore status for the 2009-10 school year. Letters of recommendation from a German teacher and a school administrator or guidance counselor are required. Families of Wisconsin applicants must be willing to host a German student in their home during the fall. There are a few “hosting only” opportunities if U.S. students are unable to travel.

Each Wisconsin high school student selected will be paired with a German high school student for a full school year. Participants should be committed, motivated, mature, adaptable, and serious students who wish to be ambassadors for their schools and the State of Wisconsin. German students stay with the American family and attend high school during fall semester and Wisconsin students spend second semester in Germany. A chaperone appointed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction will accompany the students on their travel to and from Frankfurt.

The program costs are a $400 DPI program fee, costs of hosting a German student, airfare for one roundtrip to Frankfurt, Germany, and incidentals, including a monthly allowance for the Wisconsin student in Germany.
