Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad - Bilateral Projects
Application Deadline: October 9, 2009

The program provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Support is generally made available through interagency agreements. The Department of Education transfers funds through the State Department to Fulbright commissions in various countries to pay the costs associated with administering seminars. This partnership allows the program to use the services and expertise of binational organizations to plan and conduct seminars for U.S. educators.

For elementary school teachers, there are programs to India (Seminar Title: Indian School Education System: Trends and Challenges), Mexico (Seminar Title: Inside Mexico: A Journey through History and Society), and Hungary and the Czech Republic (Seminar Title: Educational Reforms in Central Europe).

For secondary school teachers, there are programs to Brazil (Seminar Title: Diversity in Education: Attempts at Bridging a Historical Gap), Egypt (Seminar Title: 'A Chat on the Nile’ with Egyptians!), and Senegal (Seminar Title: Exploring West Africa: Spotlight on Senegal).

For post-secondary educators, there are programs to China (Seminar Title: History, Culture and Economic Development in China) and the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait (Seminar Title: UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait: Tradition and Change in the Gulf).

Euro Challenge 2010

The High School Euro Challenge is an exciting educational opportunity developed specifically for high school students in Grades 9 and 10 to learn about the European Union (EU), the European economy and the euro. Supported by the Delegation of the European Commission to the United States, the Euro Challenge takes the form of a regional and then national competition in which student teams compete for cash prizes and the chance to visit the European Delegation in Washington DC.

Schools selected to participate in the Euro Challenge will be provided with professional development, information resources, and coaching to provide guidance and assistance. Selected schools should aim to put forward one team, consisting of three to five 9th and 10th grade students. Each school team should have one (1) faculty advisor who can attend a teacher orientation meeting, the Student Conference and the Euro Challenge competition event. Students in social studies, global studies, economics, world history/geography or European studies classes will especially benefit from participating in this innovative and fun educational competition.

For more information please see the Euro Challenge Website. The registration form for Euro Challenge 2010 can be found here.

International Education Project Examples Needed

A Task Force of the DPI's International Education Council is collecting exemplary curriculum in international education. Does your classroom, school or district have something going on that would be helpful to others? Projects, units and activities, important initiatives—if so,please consider submitting ideas. Our idea is to post videos and curriculum on a webpage to be accessed by interested teachers and administrators.

We NEED you to promote yourself! Let us know what you are doing that is exciting, and that you think might be of interest to others.

Visit the BLOG on the FIE homepage to submit ideas (scroll down to "New Friends of International Education Blog").
